The Merry Widow is a 1925 silent romantic drama /comedy directed and written by Erich Von Stroheim. The Film stars John Gilbert, Mac Murray, and Roy D’Arcy. It closely follows Franz Lehar’s opera, The Merry Widow, and uses it as its main musical theme from this opera. The silent version was so popular that it was again adapted for the screen in 1934, 1952, 1962, and 1994!!
 
A Prince falls in love with a dancer. His uncle forbade the marriage. Thinking she has been jilted by her prince she marries the old lecherous Baron, whose wealth keeps the kingdom afloat. He dies suddenly and she must be wooded all over again by the Prince.
 
The run time is 137 minutes. The end sequences were filmed in two-tone technicolor. Upon its release, the film was both a critical and box office success!
 
House Organist Ron Carter will accompany the film on the Strand’s Mighty Allen Theatre Organ using the main musical theme from the Opera.
