Behind Closed Doors: Sex, Love, and Marriage in Victorian America at the William Root House is on February 24, 2024.
Back by popular demand, this special evening lecture examines whether Victorians were as sexually repressed as we perceive them to be today. Topics will range from contraception/birth control methods to the use of photography to spread explicit images during the Civil War. We’ll also discuss the people on the edges of society who were pushing the boundaries of what sex, love, and marriage looked like in the nineteenth century.
